Who we are?
Torridge Pilot Gig Club was founded in 2006 and is based in the beautiful North Devon village of Appledore. We currently have around 85 members who all love the sport of Cornish Pilot Gig rowing and welcome you to join us. We have two splendid traditionally clinker-built gigs, Kerens and Will to Win, plus two colourful plastic training gigs, Giggles and Oarsome. We offer rowing at all levels, from the odd mellow row up the river, to full-on, muscle pumping competition at numerous regattas throughout the South West and beyond.
Our Junior Section (all supervisors DBS checked) caters for ~10 – 16 year olds and our Senior Section for 17 – 70+ year olds.
Where we row?
At home, we launch from the Ferry Slip on Appledore Quay, from where we are blessed with one of the best rowing locations in the sport. Up-river towards Bideford offers near all year round shelter, whilst the route seaward offers the exhilarating world of real offshore rowing.
When we hit the road, we’ll roll up at regattas all over the South West; Ilfracombe, Clovelly, Port Gavern, Helford, Mevagissy, Looe, Salcombe, Dartmouth, Lyme Regis and Swannage, to name but quite a few. We also often take to the Thames, along with 350 odd other boats in the 22 mile Great River Race. Further afield we have competed in Holland’s mad MPM weekend and Ireland’s own Ocean to City Race at Cork. However, the real gem in the racing year has to be the Scillies World Championship. Being on the start line of 150 gigs just before sunset is an experience never to be forgotten.
